Still planning on getting a BRZ in late summer, but I can’t shut up the little voice in my head going “Why not FiST?”

I’ve driven both, I love both. The Fiesta makes more sense; it’s cheaper, the fuel economy is better (and fuel economy is a large part of the reason I’m adding a car to supplement the turbo Outback in the first place), it’s more versatile, and I could conceivably use it for Lyft when the Outback ages out. Also lordy is it a hoot when you’re on it. I autocrossed one when they first came out and it’s a blast to take a corner fast with a little left foot brake to get the back end to step out. But despite this the BRZ has a stronger emotional pull. It looks better, I love the feel of the seating position and the shifter location, I love the joy driving it brings, even during ordinary driving. While the Fiesta feels special when you’re hustling it the BRZ feels special pretty much all the time (that could well just be me and because of my personal driving/vehicle history). The BRZ also seems to have fewer problems, based on the time I’ve spent reading the forums for each.

I feel like if I get the FiST I’ll feel like I was dumb for not getting what I really wanted, and if I get the BRZ I’ll feel like I was dumb for not getting what made sense. Still though, I’m getting the BRZ. Probably. I think.

I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

Both are great, the ST is amazingly nimble and is good for smiles per mile. The BRZ is also great. I dunno... hard call.

I’d say ST, but I’m biased. With the mountune mods its the closest you’ll get to a Fiesta RS. Also, Molten Orange is pretty.

Good problem to have. I lean fiesta but Brz pulls at your heart and it does look better.

I’m no help.

You’re getting a car to supplement the Outback, not replace it. Buy a BRZ, get a FiST to replace your Outback when that comes up.

The problems with the BRZ are that you can’t get a sunroof, and you can’t get a rear wiper, either. If it had those two things, I’d take it (or the 86) over the Fiesta. The Fiesta’s back seat is kind of small.

So, the question is, which head gasket is cheaper to replace? :p

Eh. I put several miles on an FRS before I pulled the trigger on my FiST. Stock for stock, the angry turbo is more fun.

If it’s going to be your daily, I’d get a FiST. If it’s going to be your weekend car, and you are going to heavily modify it, I’d get the 86. I just wasn’t that smitten by the 86. Sure, when you wring it out it’s super fun, but in normal situations, you have to work harder to just putt around in traffic.

That said, FWIW, the 86 probably gets better real world mileage.

How much money in total do you have in that? Not prying for an answer, that’s my rebuttal. Also, how reliable will that be in the long run if it’s going to be a daily?

Too much, haven’t added it up to an exact figure, but it’s right there in the STi/RS/TypeR/GolfR range (before suspension and braking and other track shit) but for a car that is arguably more fun than any of those.

As for reliability, roll the dice, it relies more on the tune quality than anything else. Worst comes to worst, I’ve got spares in the garage.

BRZ. The FiST would be a better replacement for the Outback but the BRZ makes a much better companion to the Outback.

Unfortunately replacing the Outback with a FiST down the road isn’t an option because it doesn’t do some of the things I need a car to be capable of (recceing rough rally stages, carrying three people and a week’s worth of camping gear long distances comfortably, doubling as a bed at truck stops while driving across the country, getting around during a noreaster blizzard when they’ve decided not to plow, etc). There’s no single car newer than the Outback that does everything I need a car to do while also being as fun to drive as the Outback. That’s why I’m going to two cars in the first place.

The Outback has enough sunroof for both cars

Kinja'd!!!

As for the Fiesta backseat, I never originally intended to the back seats, this was/is going to be my “when it’s just me” car. Again, I have the Outback. I’ve spent time in the back of the Fiesta though, and while it wouldn’t work for any real distance there’s enough room for short trips (like Lyft)

I do not ascribe to the whole “RWD master race” mumbo jumbo. Driven properly a well sorted front drive car can be every bit as sideways and every bit as fun as rear drive

I put about 300 miles on the FRS (TRD edition at that) I rented during the TV shoot, with a good third of those being in Portland itself. Aside from a long uphill in stop and go traffic in the first five miles with the car (when I didn’t have a feel for the clutch yet) I didn’t mind how it felt putting around. I also really love that low seating position and that shifter could not possibly be in a better place

I just enjoy trucklike torque(admittedly with a flash), at around 3k rpm. I never have to go past 3500 in traffic, even merging onto the interstate.

I’d be keeping stock power on either, this is going to be my “fuel efficient commuter”. My Outback is already as fast as either car in a straight line, and will be made even faster once the commuter is paid off.

Too late to edit: as far as fuel economy goes, I expected the BRZ to get better real world economy (I got about 31 in the FRS), but according to Fuelly majority of BRZs land in the 27-28 range, while majority of FiSTs are 29-30

Either way it’ll be far better than what I’m managing in the Outback

Oh I fully agree a FWD car can be as quick as a RWD car, but the feeling of power oversteer in RWD can’t be matched by a handbrake yank in FWD in terms of smiles. That’s just me though.

Kinja'd!!! Dusty Ventures > Jonathan Harper
01/21/2018 at 17:26

Yeah, that gif isn’t a handbrake yank, that’s just good use of weight transfer. And THAT feels really incredible

Just a flash opens these cars up so much. I loved it stock, but now I don’t really ever see getting rid of it. Not saying I don’t plan on getting another car, but what’s wrong with multiple occasion vehicles?

Kinja'd!!! Jonathan Harper > Dusty Ventures
01/21/2018 at 17:38

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I mean I’ve done that too, still doesn’t match up to a good ‘ole powerslide where you’re actively steering the car with the throttle. But again, I know what you mean and it is nice. Just not as nice as RWD dynamics, in my eyes.
